Adventures on the Juniata:
Canoeing, Rafting, Tubing and Kayaking Trips
When a customer rents a canoe for a day they can have the canoe from sunrise to sunset during the summer hours. Spring hours, April through before Memorial Day, are 10 a.m. to sunset. However, special arrangements can be made for trips outside normal operating hours by calling for a reservation or scheduling a trip online.
Single man kayaks for fishing and tandem kayaks for river cruising are available. Rafts make a great way to enjoy the peaceful river, rest and catch some sun while floating along the river. Inner tubes are a great way to cool off during the hot summer months.
The list of destinations are estimated road miles and may vary with the course of the river itself. A five mile trip can be completed in one hour or may take all day depending upon how much work the customer wishes to do or how much they want to enjoy the water and activities along the way. Of course, the condition of the river can greatly vary the speed of the current and the lengthen or shorten the time of a trip. The Juniata River is never more than Class I water and mostly a flat, flowing river with intermittent riffles that can add a bit excitement without increasing the skill requirements for the customer.
Camping
On overnight trips, customers are able to camp on the islands of the river and many do. Remember that much of the land along the banks is private property and camping should be with permission of the landowner only. Any one is welcome to camp at the home base. However, the camping is primitive. There is no running water or electricity. A small fee of $10.00 per adult per night is required. Tents are available for rent for spur of the moment campers.
Fishing the Juniata
The Juniata River is home to some of Pennsylvania's most enjoyable fishing. The river abounds with small mouth bass, that always put up a remarkable fight no matter what size. Fish in the 8 to 12 inch range are common and larger trophies are often landed. Portions of the Juniata River are Trophy Bass Waters where larger fish are allowed to flourish before harvesting. Pan fish, including Rock Bass, Sunfish and Blue Gills are also plentiful in the Juniata River. Young fisherman will hardly ever get bored while fishing Walleye, Muskellunge. Catfish and Carp can also be caught by skillful fishermen. The best fishing is often close to sunset. An afternoon float trip saves money and provides for excellent fishing.
Night crawlers, hellgrammites and minnows are productive live bait and are available at the base store. Mr. Twisters and crank baits and jigs can also be effective. Fishing rods are available for rent for customers who decide at the last minute to include fishing in their Juniata River Adventure.
Catch and Release is always encouraged.
Ask us about fly fishing trips on some excellent nearby streams. Chain Pickerel, small mouth, large mouth and Rock Bass can often be taken from the same holes with flies. Schedule a Fly Fishing Excursion and receive two of our favorite home tied flies that have been tried and proven to catch lot of fish.
Enhance your Adventure
Even the works of man can be exciting. Locomotives speeding or trudging with their loads on the tracks that often parallel the river are impressive. The soon to be destroyed Mifflin/Miffintown Bridge or the Port Royal Bridge at sunset from a canoe provide awesome views.
Combine a shopping trip with your canoe trip! The Belleville Amish Market is only 20 miles from the base. Kim's Indoor Flee Market, Crock Hollow Gift Shop and a variety of nearby antique and craft shops are within minutes of our location. For over-night stays, accomodations are available at the Dragonfly Inn.
The Juniata Valley has become the home of many Amish families. Horse and buggies and plains clothes people are common. Their craftsmanship and shops provide for more shopping adventures.
Allow us to arrange for a picnic lunch during your float trip or a catered dinner for your group before the journey home. Perhaps a bon fire by the shore line would complete your groups day on the river. Contact us to schedule your adventure today!
